The RUSTarium Project

In 2011, I had a show at the Ministry of Casual Living where I presented photographs of five RUSTarium sculptures that had been created in 2007/2008. These sculptures were similar to terrariums except the glass jars were filled with nonliving materials such as steel wool, wire, tools, and hardware that had been rusting for a period of time.

The idea was to keep them for a period of five years to see what developed. However, in four years, they had degraded sufficiently, and additionally, the interior environment appeared unhealthy, so it was time to dispose of them.

The photograph below shows four of the RUSTariums as they were originally set up for a two-person show called Redox with Paul Romaniuk at the Slide Room Gallery, Vancouver Island School of Art in 2007 . The fifth and smallest RUSTarium was created the following year, and was shown by itself in Cassette, another show held at the Slide Room Gallery.
